Strap in. Intense and lengthy, a Sagrantino like this has a Butterfly Effect upon an evening. Consider yourself warned: deep chats and debauchery may ensue. Outrageously spice driven with a tight structure and dry palate, it's ripe, juicy and thoroughly food-friendly.

We love what Aphelion Wine Co. is all about. Small parcels of locally sourced fruit, a husband-wife couple and a passion for making exceptional wine. As a team, they have been well awarded by the wine critics (if we were into ratings we'd be sold by a 94-pointer from JH alone). But Aphelion have a lot more exciting things going for them besides. Winemaker Rob Mack has even taken out the Young Gun of Wine award. Get 'em while they're hot, these guys are going gangbusters.

"One tonne of fruit was picked from the White’s Valley vineyard (this vineyard is low yielding, and only has three rows of Sagrantino planted to it). An additional tonne of fruit was picked from a Seaview vineyard with red iron rich rocky soil. The vines on both vineyards are approaching 20 years of age. The fruit from each vineyard was destemmed and kept as whole berries before being fermented. Free run and light pressings were kept separate and then aged for 20 months in neutral and third-use French oak to round out the wine and soften the tannins. Blended and bottled in December 2018. Unfined & unfiltered."

Oi! Mushrooms! You're needed. A rich mushroom ragout balances this wine's assertive tannins. Or an aged cheddar complements its intensity very nicely indeed.
