A-grade stuff, this. An unreal reward after a long day’s hiking or the guest of honour to invite to a mid-week cook up *chef’s kiss*

This one’s a deep drinker. Swirl those red fruit, chocolatey and coffee characters now or squirrel it away for ten years or so to develop even more.

When it comes to wine families, Sam and Jock Auld are the real deal. It’d be hard not to become a vino obsessive when your Barossa Valley upbringing meant dried grape seeds cushioning falls from the monkey bars and early morning pruning as teens. But given their pioneering great-grandfather planted some of SA’s very first vines, it was written. If the Auld family name had been used consistently for the last six generations, it might be as renowned as Penfolds. But as one of the ‘in crowd’, we’re kind of pleased it isn’t.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

"On the palate this 2017 wine is rich and velvety with flavours of wild blackberries and smoky biscuit dough. The tannins are broad, ripe and generous, yet the finish is fresh, lingering and leaves the impression of dark chocolate and rhubarb compote. Grapes for this Shiraz are sourced from our growers in the Barossa Valley. The well ripened grapes are carefully de-stemmed and crushed to fermenters where they are macerated in a way to minimise extraction of hard tannins. All providing a rich and generous nose and mouthfeel. This is achieved with less vigorous maceration and lower fermentation temperatures."

FOOD MATCHING

The easy option is a classic - steak. Enjoy with a thick rib-eye and roasted veggies. The big, bold flavour can handle a mellow blue or a hard cheddar too.

RATING

WB Score: 9/10. Barossa Shiraz. Hard to lose. Alluring dark chocolate and mocha make a real winner.
