Moonlit night, good company, even better bottles. You know the drill. Tuck this shiraz away for 8 years, and it’ll rise to any special occasion, no dramas.

There’s more to this one than first meets the mouth. Layers of baking spices, dark plum, star anise and chocolate, expertly balanced with dusty tannins. Sublime stuff.

When it comes to wine families, Sam and Jock Auld are the real deal. It’d be hard not to become a vino obsessive when your Barossa Valley upbringing meant dried grape seeds cushioning falls from the monkey bars and early morning pruning as teens. But given their pioneering great-grandfather planted some of SA’s very first vines, it was written. If the Auld family name had been used consistently for the last six generations, it might be as renowned as Penfolds. But as one of the ‘in crowd’, we’re kind of pleased it isn’t.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

"This classic Barossa Shiraz shows the warmth and rich aromatics of the season. A combination of small and medium size static fermenters were used, with ‘wild’ yeasts present on the grape skins being allowed to initiate fermentation. Deep and brooding with dark plum, liquorice, anise and ripe fruits. There is a generous and inviting sweet depth of ripe fruit across the mid-palate. The wine is moreish, full and fleshy. The palate is long and concentrated with a finesse of tannins to finish."

FOOD MATCH

Enjoy with a thick chargrilled eye fillet or roasted vegetable moussaka and watch the flavours sing.

JC SCORE 9/10

Special, special wine. Put this one in the wine fridge - bring it out for occasions that are befitting of something this unique. Will improve with age and make those big name, expensive reds in your collection a little less appealing.
