Re-re-rewind. Mike Press takes us back to classical form with this Chardy, and we likey. We really, really likey. Ridiculously crisp. Juicy stonefruits, plenty of unwooded character which we absolutely froth. 2018 was a blinder of a vintage for Adelaide Hills chardonnay, so don’t mind us if we pour ourselves a glass. And then another. Actually, bear with us a sec, we might be here all night.

We love the little guy here at Wine Brothers. Especially when that little guy has some big taste credentials. Adelaide Hills’ Mike Press really gets that whole ‘devil is in the detail’ thing. Despite turning heads at award ceremonies and sneaking five star Halliday reviews, Mike Press is still as hands-on as it gets. As the owners and makers of their single vineyard wine, each and every case sold gets packaged up in the family kitchen.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

We harvested our Chardonnay grapes in the early morning when the temperature is cool to avoid the sugar levels rising and to preserve the quality of the fruit, before being cold fermented to help capture all the natural fruit aromas. Light straw yellow in colour, on the nose it is mostly about grapefruit, melons, apples and nectarine. It is a great example of an unwooded chardonnay from the Adelaide Hills stylistically. The wine is refreshing and crisp, with a full rounded palate with stone fruits and then finishing with minerality and complexity. There are some ‘green’ notes on the nose and back palate to give it lift.

FOOD MATCH

Go rich here and let that unreal crispness cuts through. Did you need an excuse to whip up a carbonara? You just found it. Sashimi and wasabi, butter chicken or gnocchi with sage butter - good, better, best.

SCORES / RATINGS

“It doesn’t get much more intimate than this – the vines are right outside the Press family’s kitchen window! Ripe stone fruit, yet with a lovely crisp citrus and herbal notes, unadulterated by oak influence or winemaker artefact. Just good old fruit-focused Chardonnay – and great to see just that – at the usual crazy Mike Press price.” – Tony Love
