Practically part of the furniture when it comes to James Halliday’s Top 100, it’s hard to believe Mike Press is a small batch producer. But as an owner and winemaker who still packs cases of wine at the family kitchen table, small batch they certainly are.

After 40 odd years of toiling for the industry giants like Penfolds, Seppelt and Mildara Blass, Mike Press was ready for a change. Together with wife Judy, he found 30 acres near the Adelaide Hills. What started as a retirement plan turned out to be rather more of a bigger deal. Sorry to interrupt your twilight years, Mike, but when something’s this good, it’s gotta be shared.

One of the Original Gangsters of the portfolio, this shiraz is both a critic and cult fave amongst Mike Press loyalists. Planted twenty years back, these vines were cloned from a Springton vineyard crop that’ve now reached the ripe old age of 100. They never fail to make a shiraz chock full of intense fruit flavours like cherries, blackberries and plum balanced by vanilla spice.

A game-changer any night of the week, or save it for five to ten years. Exceptional self-discipline will be required.

Take it from James Halliday: ‘The length and intensity of the wine grow each time you taste it – remarkable stuff’.

The 2017 vintage in the Adelaide Hills really allowed this shiraz to live up to its reputation. This is a single vineyard wine bursting with flavour. It’s light to medium-bodied and matured in American Oak for 12 months.

Red meat’s a goer here. Try steak and chips, roast beef, lamb chops. You get the idea.
