Pinot (I know this is a Grenache, stick with me here) has been our biggest love of 2022 thus far. If Pinot is the life long partner, the soul mate, the rock, then  Grenache is the summer fling. And jeez it is exciting. It is thrilling. Australian Grenache is going through a resurgence. The quality of wines from this new 'wave', this new style, is nothing short of brilliant. The Rouleur Grenache is a classic example of this; bright, lifted fruits. Perfumed; raspberry, musk, almost a bit of a redskins note (remember the confectionary?). Medium bodied. Crunchy finish. Delicious, delicious drinking. Wine shopping is the only place you're allowed a life partner and a summer fling. And you didn't hear it from me.

Calling all you high rollers. Allow us to introduce one man band Matt East. He grew up in the Yarra Valley, tinkering with his own wine from a young age, dad growing grapes in the back yard. The Rouleur philosophy is tending to pick on the earlier side for a freshness that knocks your socks off without sacrificing flavour. Matt’s rolling/rouleur journey in wine took him from national sales manager for Wirra Wirra to now getting his handy dirty, (cue suit in the bin. Sales script ripped apart. KPIs and spreadsheets deleted.). Rouleur is a tilt of the hat to his dad - lost but not forgotten - and a nod to the road less traveled.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

Reflective of our taste and style, we picked our 2021 Springs Hill Grenache at modest baume which resulted in a wine without heady alcohol or heat, just lovely pure fruit wrapped around fine grained tannin that this vineyard is so often noted for delivering.

Whilst the wine is only starting to open and reveal itself now, there’s lifted aromatics of dark raspberry, musk, blue fruit and bay leaf spice. In the mouth, there’s fine red fruits and that distinctive spice note that carry on to the finish.

FOOD MATCH

Throw out the rule book. Most internet searches are going to lead you to thinking Grenache is high alcohol / low acidity (old school). Not this bad boy. Food friendly. A late afternoon tapas sort of set up will work. Fresh veggies to roasted eggplant, or a red pepper or some hummus.
