A living legend. We can’t help but get around a Pinot like this. A tight structure, a hint of perfume. We’re feeling emotional just thinking about it. The 1ER Pinot comes from a Top Paddock block, with whole bunches in the ferment to give this wine a fine quality and purified tannins. When it tastes this good, we wholeheartedly trust the process.

We’re going out on a (sturdy) limb here, but Hoddles Creek make some of the best value wine in Aus. Led by winemaker and owner Franco D’Anna, Hoddles run a tight ship in the Yarra Valley. Everything is done for a reason. Hand-pruned vines. Hand-picked fruit. An estate grown, gravity-fed winery. Hoddles were ‘minimum intervention’ and as natural as they come long before the hipsters hijacked the movement. Chin-strokingly complex, tightrope-worthy balance.


The 2018 1ER Pinot Noir will go down as one of the classics. The block faces West but runs down to the South. This is the only block which sees the inclusion of around 20-25% whole bunches in the ferment. I'm not looking for whole bunches characters in the wine but more what it does to the tannins. This wine spent the majority of its life in Foudre, then around December it was transferred to seasoned casks until March. We do this to open the wine up as being in large format oak the wines can close down for a long period of time. Around April, this wine was then transferred to tank to spend another winter in the cellar. The wine is then bottled without filtration or fining.
