We love the little guy here at Wine Brothers. Especially when that little guy has some big taste credentials. Mike Press really gets that whole ‘devil is in the detail’ thing.

As the owners and makers of every single vineyard bottle, they’re the definition of hands-on. They’re serious perfectionists who take major pride in their work, and hoo boy does it show.

It’s Mike Press’s firm belief that great wine starts with great viticultural know-how of your particular vineyard. So for their prime spot in the Adelaide Hills, 500 metres above sea level, they knew Merlot was a pretty sure thing.

2017 was a very soggy winter, swiftly followed by a cool, dry growing season and a late harvest. With an expert touch, Mike Press called for extra time to give the grapes a little longer to get extra juicy on the vine.

And what a bloody beauty this merlot is. Intense. All kinds of berry; blackberry, raspberry, strawberry with a dusty spice too. Like a schoolboy on his best behaviour, this is a well-rounded drop. Terrific now or makes a good one to stick in the collection for a few years, if you can resist.

Over to James Halliday for the final word: ‘The four varieties grown by Mike Press are well suited to the Adelaide Hills climate, and merlot performs particularly well….The tannins have been very well handled, underwriting the medium-term cellaring capacity of the wine’.

The 2017 Vintage in the Adelaide Hills produced a style of wine with great fruit intensity. This wine has a round luscious mouth feel and good length of palate. It was matured in American and French oak.

Rich food works a treat with merlot’s tannin structure. Think grilled beef or gorgonzola cheese.
