We all know and love McLaren Vale for its Shiraz, but winemakers increasingly seek out the stunning Grenache. Sourced from a tiny 0.7 hectare block of 48 year old grenache vines, we had high expectations for this one. And hoo boy, did Bondar deliver. Light and vibrant. Silky depth. A bold cherry-raspberry bouquet. It’s a deadly, and very very drinkable combination.

Growing wine by the beach. It’s a tough life, but someone has to do it. Now here’s some real up-and-comers. Rooted in the McLaren Vale with lofty ambitions, Bondar has been part of the furniture in the Young Gun top 50 the last few years. Theirs is a small family outfit. With the oldest vines dating back to the 1950s and now in the hands of exacting winemaker Andre Bondar, every vintage is something different and complex, familiar yet fresh. Wine to get properly, unstoppably excited about.

"We really want the Rayner Grenache to be pretty yet savoury, and generally a lighter expression of the variety than most examples in our region. We believe that this is what our 1970 block wants to produce sowe just try to let it express itself as best as we can. To help achieve this we pick a little earlier than some would in order to catch the red fruits and herb. Wealso want this wine to be long lived, to have a tightness and structure for age. To help with this we use some whole bunch (around 20% in total) for some extra tannin from stalks. This also gives us extra layers of complexity to the flavours. Hand-picked fruit, wild yeast ferments, 20% whole bunches, fermented and aged for around 6 months in ceramic eggs and old French barrels. Unfined, unfiltered, bottled in Dec 2019."

Elegance and big old flavour make this grenache a great match with a mustardy lamb (bonus points if you make a bit of a grenache red wine sauce too). A Tuscan salad or tuna steak would also taste unreal.
