We love a dark horse here at Wine Brothers. And Marsanne is precisely that. Like a stemmed wine glass in a hipster bar, it’s a really rare, refreshing find. And because it flies under the radar, it’s really decent value too. Full of life, this one’s fresh on the nose with a tight, zesty palate. Like lovesick teenagers on the telephone, there’s a long, lingering farewell too.

The most exciting thing to come out of Canberra since - well - since records began. With gun winemaker Alex McKay at the helm, these guys pair unusual varietals with unparalleled knowledge of the local soil and macroclimates. It’s game-changing stuff for this largely undiscovered region. As JH so eloquently puts it, the wines they make are ‘exquisitely detailed’. Or, as we say, they’re off their head.

"The 2017/18 growing season was relatively warm, with dry weather through December/January. Care was taken in the warm conditions to harvest relatively early to retain aromatics and preserve natural grape acid. Marsanne, Viognier and Roussanne are grown east of Murrumbateman (shaley red loam). The fruit was whole bunch pressed and run to seasoned Allier and Vosges oak for fermentation. Each parcel underwent a full malolactic fermentation and was aged on lees before blending and bottling in February 2019."

With this wine’s youth and energy, you’d be wise to go for a fresh, light salad, shellfish or white fish. Or, why not do a combo of all the above with some lightly spiced fish tacos? We’re culinary geniuses, we know.

"Almost colourless. Lightly reductive, very zesty nose. Mmm. Really fills the palate with ripe, friendly fruit but has the drive and zest to keep it all racy. There has been a little evolution already. Quite long." - Jancis Robinson Trophy Best Chardonnay - 2019 Canberra and Region Wine Show
