Tumbarumba. Fun to say, fun to drink. Anyway, that’s where the grapes come from for this terrifically tasty Tiger chardy. Close to the crisp Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba has a well-earned rep for making a damn delicious chardy. This one offers heaps of citrus and stonefruit with subtle oak and a creamy texture. Cellar for even more complexity. Standout stuff.

The most exciting thing to come out of Canberra since - well - since records began. With gun winemaker Alex McKay at the helm, these guys pair unusual varietals with unparalleled knowledge of the local soil and macroclimates. It’s game-changing stuff for this largely undiscovered region. As JH so eloquently puts it, the wines they make are ‘exquisitely detailed’. Or, as we say, they’re off their head.

"The vineyard sits in a saddle at 850m above sea level, at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. The site drains to valleys either side and offers exceptional conditions for growing Chardonnay at the cool margin. The soil is deep, well-drained, weathered granite. The grapes were harvested at just over 12 Baumé, with 11+ g/L acid. The fruit was whole bunch pressed and run to a mix of new and seasoned Allier and Tronçais oak for fermentation. Each parcel underwent a full malolactic fermentation and was aged on lees before blending and bottling in February 2018."

For the veggies in the house, how’s about some pumpkin ravioli for this one? We know, it’s a bit out there. But the delicateness and creamy texture makes it a winner. Whack a bit of cheddar on top too for a full taste explosion.

“He is not known to speak much… so you have to remain alert to appreciate his unparalleled sense of humour. No such attention is needed for his wines, which are consistently excellent, their elegance appropriate for their maker.” James Halliday on winemaker Alex McKay
