Yarra Valley Chardonnay can be fantastic. It can be up there with the best in the world. But it is not easy to find. A combination of dedication in the vineyard, care in the winery and patience in the bottle. This Chardonnay ticks the boxes. Stonefruit and citrus on the nose. Complexity and intrigue lingers. Impressive length.

We’re going out on a (sturdy) limb here, but Hoddles Creek make some of the best value wine in Aus. Led by winemaker and owner Franco D’Anna, Hoddles run a tight ship in the Yarra Valley. Everything is done for a reason. Hand-pruned vines. Hand-picked fruit. An estate grown, gravity-fed winery. Hoddles were ‘minimum intervention’ and as natural as they come long before the hipsters hijacked the movement. Chin-strokingly complex, tightrope-worthy balance.


All fruit is hand-picked in the morning and immediately de-stemmed and lightly crushed into the press. No enzymes are used; instead the juice is allowed to settle naturally. In 2019, there were approximately fifteen different ferments, these were allowed to start naturally on full solids. After a select period of time, some of the juice was inoculated with cultured yeast then transferred to wood for fermentation. The wine is then left on lees for approximately 11 months. Just before bottling all clones are blended, cold stabilized, fined and filtered.


Best paired with 5pm. Everyday. That is the dream. If you want food to go with your wine (in that order), grab some Salmon, lemon, dill , butter, garlic - on the BBQ. Keep it simple. Focus on the Chardonnay.
