A-Grade Australian Chardonnay is quickly becoming an obsession around here, and I do not apologise for it. How lucky are we?  Rouleur have laid down a Yarra Valley Chardonnay that is full-on flavour - white fleshed peach, ripe grapefruit over rich almond and a hint of spiced oak.

Calling all you high rollers. Allow us to introduce one man band Matt East. He grew up in the Yarra Valley, tinkering with his own wine from a young age, dad growing grapes in the back yard. The Rouleur philosophy is tending to pick on the earlier side for a freshness that knocks your socks off without sacrificing flavour. Matt’s rolling/rouleur journey in wine took him from national sales manager for Wirra Wirra to now getting his handy dirty, (cue suit in the bin. Sales script ripped apart. KPIs and spreadsheets deleted.). Rouleur is a tilt of the hat to his dad - lost but not forgotten - and a nod to the road less traveled.

We sourced fruit for our 2019 Chardonnay from 3 Upper Yarra vineyards. Fruit was all handpicked and sorted, both on the tractor (into bins) and back at the winery prior to processing (into press). Keeping it simple, we chilled our fruit overnight before whole bunch pressing each vineyard parcel to tank for settling over 48 hours. The juice was then run by gravity to new (12%) and old 500L puncheons for fermentation.

Once in barrel, fermentation commenced using a combination of wild and inoculated yeast. We generally avoid MLF with our Chardonnay, however one ‘rogue barrel’ ticked through secondary ferment naturally - which was a blessing in disguise, providing an interesting and delicious 20% parcel to finally blend with. Our Chardonnay remained on gross lees for 8 months in barrel before being blended, fined and lightly filtered prior to bottling in late November 2019.

Do this one right. Large lounge chair. Leather please. Double-breasted newspaper. Crackers. Cloth-wrapped cheddar from Wicked Cheese. And a small slice of King Island Blue Cheese. Do not disturb sign displayed.
