Mataro is a dark horse. And we love a dark horse. Particularly in a fixed race. Mataro is often blended away (think GSM wines) and doesn't get to see the bottle as a standalone. Decent Mataro takes patience in the vineyard, and precision in the winery. And a go-getter attitude. Rouleur nailed all three here. A juicy wine, dark fruits shining through. Medium-bodied. The 'whole bunch' creates a bit of stemmy vibe, without it being too much. I like it - all positive. Really drinkable. 


Calling all you high rollers. Allow us to introduce one man band Matt East. He grew up in the Yarra Valley, tinkering with his own wine from a young age, dad growing grapes in the back yard. The Rouleur philosophy is tending to pick on the earlier side for a freshness that knocks your socks off without sacrificing flavour. Matt’s rolling/rouleur journey in wine took him from national sales manager for Wirra Wirra to now getting his handy dirty, (cue suit in the bin. Sales script ripped apart. KPIs and spreadsheets deleted.). Rouleur is a tilt of the hat to his dad - lost but not forgotten - and a nod to the road less traveled.


Our 2019 Mataro comes from the exceptional Springs Hill vineyard, high on Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale. Fruit was 100% handpicked and sorted back at the winery before tipping to two 2000L pots for fermentation. 


Each open fermenter was half filled, footstomped then the remaining whole bunches were tipped on top and left alone with a blanket of Co2 and tarpaulin. Within 2 days, wild fermentation had commenced. After 8 days, one pot was pressed off while still warm to retain fruitfulness and avoid excessive (rachis) tannin pick-up. The second pot was pressed after 14 days on skins and both parcels were kept separate in tank until dryness. In barrel, the wine ticked through MLF, was lightly sulphured and given a quick rack and return during winter. After 9 months maturation, our small batch Mataro was bottled without fining and only light filtration. Being 100% whole bunch, this wine is naturally stemmy without being hard or herbal. 


It depends how you want to tackle this wine (and life). Two options.


Option 1 - White table cloth. Polished crockery. Long pants and slacks. Mother-in-law for dinner sort of vibe. Beef stew and a side of portobello mushrooms. You will pass with flying colours. 

Option 2 - Country pub. Big courtyard. Meat Pie. Footy on. Mates.
