‘The heart that gives, gathers’, so goes ancient Chinese philosophy. Well, old mate Isolde must’ve got wind of it somehow, because Isolde is one seriously generous Cab Sav with a magnetic pull that’ll have a crowd entranced. And yes, it doesn’t take much to gather your mates around a bottle of wine, but still. Creamy, fruity, complex and elegant, Isolde will only get richer ‘til 2027.

Cutting his teeth at Yalumba winery for twenty years, former chief winemaker Simon Sorby Adams has decided to go off piste with his own venture. With intricate knowledge of Barossa and Eden Valley vineyards, there’s few who know how to make a ripper small batch bottle like Simon. Our two cents? Two cool-climate vineyards (with some vines first planted in 1932) plus a black book with the best growers in the Barossa sets Sorby Adams up to make some pretty mesmerising stuff, and they don’t disappoint.

"Fruit characters of blackberry, cassis and blackcurrant, with higher tones of redcurrant and red cherry showing through. Hinds of red liquorice, cinnamon, five-space, briar, earth, espresso and chocolate combine to produce a most alluring and complex bouquet."

Steak is a mouthwatering no-brainer, but let’s stretch the imagination, shall we? A rich, savoury mousakka will balance out the dark fruit flavours well, or earthy mushrooms are ripper too.
