Single vineyard Grenache from Blewitt Springs in McLaren Vale from the outstanding 2018 vintage, that is at both cellarworthy and powerful, and delicate and weightless. This is limited in numbers so get it whilst you can!

 

As with many great stories, VANGUARDIST was born of humble beginnings. Ideals, harmonised over a table littered with empty bottles. Laughs that rolled late into the evening, not realising the impetus forming; a relentless ‘fire in the belly’ that sent Michael bouncing across the equator, chasing international harvests for most of his adult life. 

 

The Vanguardist range represents the epitome of what they are about. Pushing the realms of standard winemaking to deliver intrigue, excitement and utmost quality, without any loss of sense of place. Ultimate dedication to the craft of viticulture and winemaking, encapsulated in a bottle –through our lens.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

First and foremost, it’s a wine that’s defined by its ultra-mineral quality and quartz-like tannin. In with that, you have ripe red berries, seductive potpourri perfume, peanuts, a little biscuit and baking spice, along with some sage and aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, fresh, but firm and packed with stony/chalky tannin, ample fruit, though nothing sweet or overt. Finish is long, dry and firm, almost a Barolo-like quality to it (which is no bad thing, of course). It feels like a long-term wine, and should probably be left alone for a year or two, at least. I’d say it’s a benchmark for Grenache.

FOOD PAIRING

A fancy dinner is calling. This truly deserves the best cut of meat with all the trimmings!
