Deep Woods release seasons get us bloody excited. Year after year Jules and his legendary Margaret River winemaking team present us with some amazing wines - the 2019 Reserve Chardonnay is no exception. In fact, it is one for the books. Worth a read, well worth the drink.

Classic flint and toasty oak on the nose, with stone fruits and pure floral shinning through. A rich and full pallet, with a elements of citrus and white nectarine. Pristine acidity with a great concentration and intensity.

These guys just do everything right. An innate understanding of their 80 acres in ‘winemaking nirvana’ Margaret River and a tight focus on small batch quality means they’re strides ahead of the big dogs when it comes to agility and flavour. It’s this clever clog kind of thinking that scoops up all sorts of awards (65 golds to be precise) including James Halliday's Winemaker of the Year 2019 for Julian Langworthy. They’re wines JH described as having balance ‘beyond compare’. Impressive stuff without a doubt.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

Deep Woods Reserve Chardonnay is a modern classic, refined, elegant with understated power and precision, I buy more of this wine than any other and this year will be no exception.

2019 was a tricky but very rewarding vintage in Margaret River. A steady, mild season allowed for slow, measured flavour development that resulted in balanced natural acidity and lifted varietal fruit character, resulting in wines with incredible perfume, true elegance and real personality.

This wine is an assemblage of one central Willyabrup vineyard, but with the majority of the fruit coming from an excellent mature vineyard in Wallcliffe and a small amount of fruit from Karridale. The fruit was hand-picked and then chilled to maintain pristine condition. A minimalist approach in the winery included whole-bunch pressing, wild fermentation and sparing lees stirring in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak. The individual parcels were kept separate and aged on lees for 9 months until the final wine was blended for bottling.

FOOD MATCHING

Grab yourself a good mate, jump in a 7 seat Uber (we are going fancy today) and get out to Crown Wine Cellars in Deep Water Bay. Say goodbye to the sunlight (and phone reception) as you enter the WWII bunker. Shut the door firmly behind you. Order the scallops, lean into the deep red leather chair and pour your Chardonnay. Sip slowly, taste meaningfully and speak truth. Time has no meaning. Problems are solvable. World politics is simple. This is what great Chardonnay can do.

RATING

Light, bright yellow colour, with a very smoky bouquet reflecting toasty oak and reductive nuances. Rich, full and soft-textured, dry and savoury, tangy mineral undertones, with tremendosuly intense grapefruit flavours rocketing through the artifact flavours. Great concentration and persistence. A truly outstanding chardonnay.
