The Black Blood series are a trio of wines that represent a wonderful journey into McLaren Vale Shiraz. ‘Terroir’ is a word that encapsulates the taste of a wine due to its unique environment – altitude, climate, rainfall, temperature and soil.

The Black Blood trio are each from a different Hugh Hamilton vineyard with a distinct terroir. We keep everything else as consistent as possible – picking dates, winemaking approach, oak regime, maturation – so you can taste the place.

Every family has a black sheep. Hugh Hamilton wines happen to have more than one. Hugh's McLaren Vale wine family dynasty stretches back 180 years, when Hugh's great-great grandfather planted Australia's first grapes (thank goodness). Now Hugh is master of a most reprobate range of varieties from the classics to the more eclectic. When it comes to tasting these wines, you can expect to enjoy the difference.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

Cellar Block is often slow to shine; the secrets of the black clay only told in time. The trade for this longevity in bottle is a more defined texture in its youth that needs age to become supple. Ribbons of red fruit escape the molasses black expanse of this wine’s aromatics. Wet earth and split stone persistent accompaniments to the stealthy fruit. Florals spike through the dark in spite of it. Apple skin, and rhubarb. Coal smoke. An iron caged basket of fruit. The whole thing hums and chugs like a steam engine – and is every bit as solid.

FOOD MATCH

A choice cut of aged beef, cooked simply, but well- cahrred to taste
