The Black Blood series are a trio of wines that represent a wonderful journey into McLaren Vale Shiraz. ‘Terroir’ is a word that encapsulates the taste of a wine due to its unique environment – altitude, climate, rainfall, temperature and soil.

The Black Blood trio are each from a different Hugh Hamilton vineyard with a distinct terroir. We keep everything else as consistent as possible – picking dates, winemaking approach, oak regime, maturation – so you can taste the place.

Every family has a black sheep. Hugh Hamilton wines happen to have more than one. Hugh's McLaren Vale wine family dynasty stretches back 180 years, when Hugh's great-great grandfather planted Australia's first grapes (thank goodness). Now Hugh is master of a most reprobate range of varieties from the classics to the more eclectic. When it comes to tasting these wines, you can expect to enjoy the difference.

FROM THE WINEMAKER

There’s never enough wine from this block; the phenomenally plush mid palate is useful in almost any Shiraz blend. For me this fruit is truly at the heart of the Vale – both geographically and deliciously. A sweet lift of boudoir perfume and red leather chesterfield. Sweet tobacco pouch – cigar boxed, gift wrapped in iodine and iron. Aniline dyed and violet. It has the blues too; blueberries, damsons, and currants. Milk chocolate right through the palate. Fulsome rose notes and red earth.
